Nolan Bennett photographs the natural and built world as it already is.

I don't move things. I don't wait for a subject to do something more interesting than what it was already doing, and I don't add a sky that wasn't there. Most of the work is deciding where to stand, and then how long to stay.

Nearly all of it is made alone, early or late, in places I have gone back to more than once — a stone corridor at Angkor before the gates open, a hillside in the south of Spain in the hour before the light commits to anything. The photographs that survive the edit are almost always the ones where I did the least.

I print on cotton rag, sign in pencil, and number a fixed edition that is never reopened.

Nolan Bennett is a photographer working in landscape, architecture, and the natural world. His work is made in extended, repeated visits to a small number of places, and is held in private collections.

No photograph on this site is composited, sky-replaced, or generated. Software is used here for cataloguing, file handling, and the ordinary adjustments a darkroom would have allowed. Nothing enters a frame that was not in front of the camera.
